Christian and single

Ever since I got engaged, I get asked the question, “How did you know?” quite a bit.  I usually respond with, “When you know, you know”, and while I still feel like that’s somewhat true, I have another answer.

First, let me throw out my disclaimer – To the best of my knowledge, I have never been married a day in my life.  Likewise, I claim to know nothing on how to have a healthy marriage, although I am getting counsel and reading books on that.  This is purely my opinion.

Now that that’s out of the way, here’s how I knew. Continue reading

The Twitter Commandments Part 1

I love Twitter.  It has become my first option when it comes to social media surpassing Facebook.  It’s quick, easy and a great way to get information out.  In order to make sure everyone has a great Twitter experience I have decided to compile “The Twitter Commandments.”  There are only 5 at the moment, but I’m sure more will come as the world turns.

When Twittering try and keep these in mind.  You will make the Twitter world a better place.  Without further adieu, I present to you “The Twitter Commandments, Part 1.” Continue reading

Social Justice and Legalism

I remember it like it was yesterday.  I was standing outside church talking to Richard who was a year older than me.  I had heard that he was thinking about going to a school dance and that was a big no-no.
“You aren’t going to go to prom are you?”
“Yeah, I am.  It’s my junior prom and I don’t think I should miss it.”
“But, we have an alternative. You can get dressed up and hop on a bus and go to Atlanta.  Plus you will be kicked off Youth Council.”
“I don’t care anymore.  I’m going to my prom.” Continue reading

Ministry Lesson #5

This lesson is still going and it has to do with community groups.

I lead a small group.  I take that back, I lead a medium group. Well, it really could be called a large group and has been called a small church, but let’s just stick with “medium group.”  It all started one September afternoon after reading The Hole in our Gospel with a friend, we decided to start a small group. Church as a kid: Friend Day

“Oh, we are totally going to shave your head! I am going to invite everyone I know!!”

That right there was my inspiration for inviting people to “Friend Day” at church.  For those who didn’t grow up in church or didn’t get the joy of having Friend Day, it’s one Sunday a year where EVERYONE invites neighbors, classmates, friends, maids, garbage men, etc to church.  They didn’t even have to be your friend. Worth the wait?

So, I’m getting married.  Yep.  October 16th, 2010.  Finally.

I’m learning all sorts of new things.  For example, I don’t get to pick out what my tux looks like!  (Shocking, I know.) I have to coordinate what I wear with the “colors” of our wedding.  What the heck!?  I thought I was being a good fiance by not wanting to be heavily involved with things and the next I know I am being told that I have to wear a brown tux.  That’s not exactly how I imagined I would look on my wedding day. The blog, it is a-changin

I have a good friend named Grant. He blogs here.

Grant noticed that my blog needed some work done to make it more useful for everyone.

Grant suggested change.

Blog definitely changed and I am switching my writing style to tap into the 6 year old learning to read market. Continue reading

Church as a kid: Revival

Ah revival. The time of year that you go to church on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night. As a kid this was a death sentence. “Every night!? Really??”

As a pastor this had to be a humbling time. If you are reviving something that means it was close to death. So you hire someone to come in and revive it. Or as I saw it as a kid, scare the crap out of everyone. Continue reading

Plan B

This month marks the 1 year anniversary of my personal “Plan B.” I won’t bore you with the details as I have already done that. (If you want to read it- it’s here Part 3)If you haven’t guessed the reference yet (and let’s be honest, 85% of you are here because of a @pwilson retweet that happened at some point) this post is my review of the book “Plan B” by Pete Wilson. A Divine Appointment

MY PERCEPTION:

We were lost. Behind me there were 19 other cars waiting for me to make a move. I was their leader. I looked around and that panic feeling came over me again. “I’ve brought 40 people out into the middle of nowhere and have no clue what to do.” My volunteers were beginning to get restless. I checked my cellphone once again, no service. Continue reading
